Istanbul guide · Practical notes

Know the city before you step into it.

A concise guide to getting around, visiting landmarks, eating well, staying comfortable, and choosing the right time for your first Istanbul visit.

A few useful details can turn a first visit into a more relaxed one.

01

Getting around

Start with an Istanbulkart

Use a rechargeable Istanbulkart for trams, metros, buses, ferries, and funiculars. Keep a little extra balance for spontaneous crossings between the European and Asian sides. You can now use your credit card. If you wont be staying long time and if you dont wanna worry about hassle, don't have to get Istanbulcard...

Let ferries do the work

Ferries are both practical transport and one of the city’s best viewpoints. Allow extra time at the pier, especially during weekday commuting hours.

02

Museums and landmarks

Book the important stops early

For major landmarks and popular museums, morning visits are usually calmer. Check the official opening hours and entry requirements before setting out, as schedules can change. When you tour with me you don't have to worry about long line and getting tickets in advanced.

Dress with care at mosques

Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and be ready to remove shoes. Prayer times can affect visitor access, so a flexible plan makes the day smoother.

03

Food and local rhythm

Plan for small breaks

Build in time for tea, a simit by the water, or a relaxed lunch in a neighborhood restaurant. The most memorable meals are often between the headline sights.

Follow the neighborhood

Try a local specialty where it belongs: fish by the Bosphorus, classic dishes in the old city, and a long breakfast in a residential quarter.

04

Comfort and safety

Keep the essentials close

Istanbul is lively and welcoming, but busy areas call for the same care you would use in any major city. Keep valuables secure and use licensed transport when needed.

Choose comfortable shoes

Historic streets can be steep, uneven, and full of surprises. Comfortable walking shoes and a light layer will take you further than a tightly packed schedule.

05

When to visit

Spring and autumn are easygoing

April to May and September to October often offer pleasant walking weather and a balanced city pace. Summer days can be hot, while winter rewards visitors with quieter streets.

Use the light well

Begin historic routes early, reserve the middle of the day for indoor stops or lunch, and save the waterfront for late afternoon when the city softens into evening.

A good Istanbul day leaves room for the unexpected.

Use these notes as a starting point, then let the city’s ferries, side streets, and conversations shape the rest.
